The crown jewel of the Formula 1 season is set to write a new chapter on Sunday, as the best drivers of the world hit the streets of Monaco

This will be the first race in three weeks for F1, as they were scheduled to return to action last Sunday, but torrential rain across northern Italy forced the FIA to cancel the Emilia Romagno Grand Prix.

While there is no question which team is the best in Formula 1, the early signs of how things have gone are showing that there might be a significant battle for the driver’s championship this season. In each of the first five races, a Red Bull driver has taken the checkered flag, with two-time defending champion Max Verstappen winning three of them, including coming from behind to win the Miami Grand Prix three weeks ago.

The Dutchmen is currently leading the points coming into Sunday, but his teammate Sergio Perez is right behind him second, 14 points back. heading into Monaco. The duo has finished 1-2 in all but one race thus far, with Perez leading most of the race in South Beach before Verstappen got around him late in the race. The Mexican driver played a little defense against his teammate in that race, showing that maybe the teammates could battle it out for the championship, similar to what we saw between Mercedes teammates Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton do back in the mid-2010s.

Speaking of Mercedes, they had some glimmering hopes of improvement, with George Russell finishing fourth in Miami, and Hamilton ending up second in Australia. Things were looking bleak for Hamilton three weeks ago after qualifying 13th, but made his way to a sixth-place finish.

Some view Monaco as a love-hate relationship. The event itself brings out the biggest celebrities, and is arguably the biggest spectacle in the sport. However, the race is criticized as not being nearly as exciting as tracks such as Imola, Silverstone and Monza. Yet, it is shaping up to be another exciting event with all the storylines involved.

Red Bull has dominated the last number of years in Monte Carlo, with the team boasting winners in three of the last four races dating back to 2018, including Perez taking the checkered flag last season.
