Rangers vs Manchester United - LIVE!

Manchester United picked up their first pre-season win of the summer as they beat Rangers 2-0 at Murrayfield. Leny Yoro and Jadon Sancho both started in a relatively strong lineup for the first-half. Summer signing Yoro was composed on the ball and sharp when called into action at the back, sliding in well with a last-ditch challenge early on as Rangers got in behind.

Sancho was fairly quiet on the left wing, with Amad Diallo on the opposite flank stealing the show with a brilliant performance. He was a constant threat on the right wing, setting up an early chance for Ethan Wheatley and the striker blazed over when he should have scored. Amad got his reward for his display before the break, cutting inside onto his left foot and whipping a superb finish into the bottom corner.

Erik ten Hag made ten changes at half-time, Andre Onana the only player to keep his place, and there was unsurprisingly a slower pace to the match. There was little in the way of clear-cut chances until Joe Hugill doubled the lead with a brilliant strike, the 20-year-old firing off the underside of the bar after being played in by Maxi Oyedele.

Ten Hag praises Man United hierarchy

19:25 , Matt Verri

Man United have already brought in Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro this summer, and Erik ten Hag is pleased with the quick work in the transfer window.

“This is very good,” the Dutchman says.

“We are on the front foot, very proactive. Leadership is doing a great job in this moment. That’s how we want to act. At United we are highly ambitious.

“The earlier you can get your players in, then you can work on your team.”

Ten Hag lays down challenge for Amad

18:46 , Matt Verri

“This has to be Amad Diallo’s year.”“We have to see Amad in a different way, he is not inexperienced anymore. I trust him.”

Post-match thoughts from Yoro

18:20 , Matt Verri

"It was incredible,” he tells MUTV.

“For me it is really good. We go to America for three competitive games.

“The team will give everything to win them."

Yoro makes first start!

18:14 , Matt Verri

So Leny Yoro is up and running in a Man United shirt.

He played the first 45 minutes this afternoon, alongside Jonny Evans, and he was composed on the ball, with little defending to be done.

Leny Yoro's game by numbers vs. Rangers:

45 minutes played 100% duels won (1/1) 92% pass accuracy (44/48)4 accurate long balls 2x possession won 1 block 1 clearance1 tackle 0 fouls conceded 0x dribbled past

An impressive start. ????#MUFC pic.twitter.com/2yegHB5yom

Some finish!

18:06 , Matt Verri

Man United basically had one chance in the second-half... Joe Hugill was ready!

Crashed off the underside of the bar and past Jack Butland.

FT: Rangers 0-2 Man United

18:03 , Matt Verri

That’ll do at Murrayfield.

Man United with their first win of the summer, Amad and Hugill with the goals in an improved display.

Ten Hag will be pretty satisfied with that.

Rangers 0-2 Man United

18:00 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Onana’s fifth save, and the best of them.

Rangers come forward down their left, ball swung into the box and Danilo's volley is a good one.

Onana down well at his near post to parry it away.

Rangers 0-2 Man United

17:58 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Both sides playing like they are ready for the full-time whistle.

I’m going to take a wild guess that we don’t get a second of added-time...

Rangers 0-2 Man United

17:56 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Ten Hag still waving his arms around on the touchline, he’s not relaxing in these final ten minutes or so.

Balogun pings a ball over the top of the United defence, Matondo is in but he can’t make contact with the volley.

Fish got caught out there at the back.

Rangers 0-2 Man United

17:52 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Nine Rangers subs has not helped the pace of the match.

Scottish side seeing plenty of the ball, as United sit off, but struggling to create anything.

Been a routine afternoon for Onana so far.

Those Rangers changes...

17:50 , Matt Verri

You can all relax now.

75' | Man Utd 2-0 Rangers

???? SUB: Nine changes for Rangers.

➡️ ON: King, Goldson, Balogun, Ridvan, Dowell, McKinnon, McCausland, Lowry & Danilo

⬅️ OFF: Sterling, Souttar, Davies, Jefte, Barron, Diomande, Lawrence, Wright & Dessers

— Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) July 20, 2024

Rangers 0-2 Man United

17:47 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Rangers have only made one change up to this point, but that’s about to change.

There are.... a lot of players coming on. Looks like near enough the entire side.

Rangers 0-2 Man United

17:44 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Rangers can break, Dessers charging into space and he squares it towards Matondo.

Too much on the pass, Matondo forced wide and the chance goes.

GOAL! Rangers 0-2 Man United | Joe Hugill 70'

17:42 , Matt Verri

Sensational finish!

Ball slid through to Hugill by Oyedele, the striker runs onto it and hammers a superb strike off the underside of the bar.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:38 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Amass slides in, Ogunneye jumps for the header, Onana flaps at thin air.

It’s a mess in the box from United, but they just about survive. Onana was all over the place.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:37 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Rain continues to fall at Murrayfield.

It’s nearly silent in the stands - not sure the fans are particularly impressed with the July weather.

You’d hear it if someone sneezed.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:34 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Not much pace to United’s play at the moment.

Playing it around at walking pace in midfield and defence.

Onana’s pass through the lines is a good one, here come United on the attack. Hannibal topples over, whistle goes.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:31 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Chance for Rangers... superb from Fish!

Low ball into the middle, Matondo is free and should get a shot away, but Fish slides in and United survive.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:30 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Matondo cuts onto his right foot, has options for the pass but goes to curl an effort from the edge of the area.

Starts straight at Onana, finishes straight at Onana.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:27 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Hannibal wants a free-kick, or a corner, or anything that isn’t a goal-kick.

It’s a goal-kick. Diomande too strong.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:25 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Onana the only player older than 21 in this United side now.

They’re on top at the moment, though. Rangers haven’t offered anything since the break.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:22 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Matondo, the only Rangers change at the break, wins a corner for his side.

Swung deep, players falling over, but the referee waves play on and United clear the danger.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:20

48 mins: Don’t think Rangers have had a kick since half-time.

A very young team for United now, but they have made a sharp start. Keen to make an impression.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:18 , Matt Verri

Here is the Man United XI for the second half:

Onana; Ogunneye, Bennett, Fish, Amass; Oyedele, Fletcher, Hannibal; Mather, Ennis, Hugill.

Back underway!

17:16 , Matt Verri

Just the ten changes at half-time from United.

Onana stays in goal, but the rest of the lineup has been completely changed.

More on that in a second...

First goal of the summer!

17:09 , Matt Verri

Amad Diallo has got Man United up and running in pre-season.

Clever run from Mason Mount to create the space, and Amad took full advantage.

Man United bench

17:05 , Matt Verri

Can always expect plenty of changes in these friendly matches.

Sure that will be the case here, if not at half-time then after about an hour. Here’s a reminder of those on the bench for Man United this afternoon...

Subs: Mee, Vitek, Aljofree, Amass, Bennett, Fish, Jackson, Ogunneye, J. Fletcher, Hannibal, Mather, Oyedele, Scanlon, Ennis, Hugill

HT: Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:01 , Matt Verri

There’s the half-time whistle.

United have been fairly impressive, particularly on that right wing. Amad superb, with Mount drifting over to support him.

Not a whole lot to do for Yoro so far, but he’s been composed on the ball.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

17:00 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Should be 2-0!

Rangers could do with three left-backs, Amad is running them ragged on that wing. Jefte having a miserable afternoon.

Amad onto his left foot in the box, opts not to shoot this time and instead squares it for Sancho.

Completely free, fires over the bar.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

16:58 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Pace of the match has slowed down a bit since the goal.

United happy enough to keep the ball, not doing a whole lot with it as half-time approaches.

Rangers 0-1 Man United

16:57

41 mins: Man United probably deserve to be in front, Amad definitely deserves that goal.

Yoro launches the ball forward for Wheatley, challenges in the air but can only end up in a heap on the floor.

He’s worked hard, the young striker. Should have scored too with that early chance.

GOAL! Rangers 0-1 Man United | Amad Diallo 39'

16:54 , Matt Verri

Was always going to be him!

Rangers give the ball away and Mount can drive forward, playing it wide to Amad.

He cuts inside, onto that left foot and whips a low finish into the bottom corner.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:52 , Matt Verri

37 mins: United make a mess of things in defence, Yoro gifting the ball straight to Rangers.

Dessers with a shot blocked, before Lawrence’s powerful strike is saved.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:51 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Casemiro with a tame shot from the edge of the area, was barely going to reach Butland but Davies flicks it away for a corner. Think that’s about 300 of them now.

Pulled to the edge of the box, shot blocked and Rangers can break.

Cortes has plenty of space, but he takes too long to make the pass and United get numbers back.

Dessers then drags Mount to the ground - Man United man has little time for the apology. As obvious a booking as you’ll see in a competitive match.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:49 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Better spell for Rangers, who are starting to find space in the United half.

Wright again the man leading the charge, this time he’s all by himself so goes for an early shot.

Comfortable for Onana.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:47 , Matt Verri

32 mins: First Rangers attack in about 20 minutes.

Wright brings the ball down nicely, picks out Dessers in the box. He gets a shot away on the swivel, straight at Onana.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:44 , Matt Verri

29 mins: All of United’s attacks coming down their right, looking really sharp on that wing. Rangers struggling, yet another corner to come.

United keep winning them... and doing basically nothing with them.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:42 , Matt Verri

27 mins: This one taken short, Murray eventually swings the ball in and Rangers comfortably clear.

The Scottish side try and break, with Wan-Bissaka out of position, but Collyer does well to get across and win it back.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:41 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Amad flicks it through to Sancho, who has decided to drift over to that right wing as well.

He fires it low into the middle, Wheatley waiting at the back post but it’s hacked behind for a corner before it can reach him.

Deep corner, Sancho back in and cleared away for another one.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:38 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Amad and Mount standing over this.

It’s Amad... just wide! Great effort, Butland was scrambling across and not sure he was getting there.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:37 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Amad has been so bright for United, best player on the pitch so far by a distance.

Cuts inside this time, onto his left foot, and he’s tripped just outside the area.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:34 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Couple of corners in quick succession for United.

Mount swings the second of them into the six-yard box, Butland off his line to punch it away.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:32 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Brilliant block!

Wheatley flicks it on, Amada drives down United’s right and into the box.

Perfect cut-back, Wheatley is free but it’s turned away on the line. Had to score.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:31 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Amad the latest to go flying in, another pretty poor challenge.

Two-footed... someone is going to get booked if this carries on!

Rangers take the free-kick short, Lawrence fires over from 25 yards out.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:29 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Collyer has made three fouls already - fairly keen to make an impact, you would say. Maybe too keen.

Sterling briefly thinks he’s in down the right for Rangers, but the offside flag is up.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:26 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Collyer slides in late, free-kick Rangers. Another one that he gets away with as it’s a friendly.

Rangers take it quickly, ball in behind and Yoro has to get across quickly to turn it away for a corner.

Swung in deep, Wan-Bissaka with the initial header, and Casemiro is there when the ball comes back in.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:24 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Casemiro picked out at the near post, can’t quite direct the header and it loops wide.

Brazilian has been heavily involved so far... good and bad.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:23 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Great switch out to Murray at left-back, plenty of room out on that wing.

Casemiro pings it out to Amad on the opposite flank, he dances along the byline and wins a corner for United.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:22 , Matt Verri

7 mins: United dominating the ball, but haven’t really got it into Rangers territory yet.

That’s better, nice flick and Sancho can drive down the left wing. Crowded out, though, and has to turn back.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:19

5 mins: Yoro with his first touch, has to move quickly as Casemiro underhits the pass back to him.

Casemiro captaining the United side this afternoon - hasn’t exactly got off to a flying start.

Rangers are pressing high up the pitch, not just letting United have it comfortably.

Rangers 0-0 Man United

16:17 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Not a particularly ‘friendly’ start to this match.

Tackles flying in, Casemiro lunges in on Lawrence just outside the area and brings the Rangers man down.

Would have been a yellow card in a competitive match.

Comes to nothing, as Diomande very ambitiously goes for goal. Wide.

KICK-OFF!

16:15 , Matt Verri

At long last we’re up and running!

Here we go (again)!

16:13 , Matt Verri

Whistle from the referee, as he calls the two captains over.

Pitch is now being cleared of all the extra balls and flags, looks like we’re finally ready.

Players going straight from this warm-up into kick-off... via some handshakes and coin tossing.

Second warm-up for players

16:07 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy sat together on the touchline, waiting for this match to get underway.

Players are currently having another quick warm-up.

16:02 , Matt Verri

Been confirmed now that a ticket issue is the reason for the delay.

Still a decent number of fans outside waiting to get into the stadium, so decision has been made to give them some extra time.

Kick-off delayed

15:57 , Matt Verri

Well, settle in.

Not sure why yet, but kick-off has been pushed back by 15 minutes.

Now set to get underway at 4:15pm.

15:55 , Matt Verri

Big crowd at Murrayfield, as you’d expect.

Players are in the tunnel, they’ll be out onto the pitch in the next couple of minutes.

Sorry to report there are half-and-half crowds all over the shop.

Not long now!

15:48 , Matt Verri

Kick-off just over ten minutes away.

Man United looking for their first win, and first goal, of the summer after a 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg kicked off pre-season.
