It was the fastest goal ever scored against the Crew when Alonso Martinez put New York City ahead 1-0 14 seconds into the Leagues Cup quarterfinals match, but the teams would still go all the way penalty kicks to decide to winner.

Behind a final make from DeJuan Jones, Columbus defeated NYCFC 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals.

Martinez was able to put New York City quickly on the board when he forced Crew defender Rudy Camacho into a turnover. Camacho had just received the ball from Cucho Hernandez following the kickoff but Martinez's attack led to Camacho giving the ball away and the first goal of the match.

The Crew were scoreless for a majority of the first half, until striker Cucho Hernandez hit a header shot to even the score 1-1 in the 41st minute. That score would remain until the final whistle in regulation.

To start the penalty kick shootout, both Columbus and New York City hit its first two attempts, but missed the third.

Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte allowed the fourth attempt from NYCFC's James Sands to get past, but Matt Freese did the same in Hernandez's attempt.

With its final attempt before extra penalty kicks would be required, NYCFC's Santiago Rodriguez had his attempt go high, leaving all the pressure on Jones.

Jones sent a short shot to Freese's left as he dove to the right, winning the match for Columbus.

The Crew are advancing to the semifinals behind a penalty kick make from new addition DeJuan Jones. Columbus defeats NYCFC 4-3 in penalty kicks.

The Crew and NYCFC remain tied, 4-4 in penalty kicks.

NYCFC's Max Moralez and Crew's Diego Rossi both have attempts saved.

Penalty kicks are tied 2-2.

Crew and NYCFC tied 1-1.

Thiago Martins hits his penalty kick, NYCFC goes up 1-0

With regulation ending in a 1-1 tie between the Crew and New York City, the winner of the Leagues Cup quarterfinals matchup will be determined in penalty kicks.

Crew defender Steven Moreira received a cross from DeJuan Jones at the top of New York City's box, and took a shot attempt that would go right above the crossbar.

New York City defender Tayvon Gray was no longer able to play through his right ankle injury he suffered during the second half, and was replaced by Ilenic Mitja.

Striker Cucho Hernandez took the free kick following the foul against midfielder Darlington Nagbe that led to NYCFC's Santigo Rodriguez getting the yellow card. Treating the free kick like a shot opportunity, Hernandez's attempt went high above the goal, giving New York City the ball.

For the Crew:

  • DeJuan Jones replaces midfielder Max Arfsten
  • Jacen Russell-Rowe replaces Christian Ramirez

Another player for New York City suffered an injury in the second half when Tayvon Gray went down with a right ankle injury. After needing to be helped up and examined by the club's medical staff, Gray was taken off the field but was able to return to the match.

New York City defender Strahinja Tanasijevic went down with a possible injury when the Crew's free kick outside NYCFC's box hit Tanasijevic. He was replaced in the match by Birk Risa.

There was another substitution for New York City, forward Alonso Martinez was replaced by Mounsef Bakrar.

For the second Leagues Cup match in a row, the attendance at Lower.com Field is under 15,000 with 14,071 coming for the quarterfinal game between Columbus and New York City.

The Crew replaced defender Yevhen Cheberko with Malte Amundsen.

The weather forecast had indicated that there was a possibility for rain during the Crew-NYCFC Leagues Cup quarterfinal match. And halfway through the second half, a light drizzle started to come down at Lower.com Field.

New York City made two substitutions in its first round of subs:

  • Kevin O'Toole replaces defender Chrisitan McFarlane
  • Justin Haak replaces midfielder Keaton Parks

Max Arfsten, and most of Lower.com Field, thought he gave the Crew a 2-1 lead over New York City when he battled for the ball near the goal, took a dribble past goalkeeper Matt Freese and had the short shot attempt find the back of the net, but the official ruled Arfsten offsides.

Midfielder Max Arfsten had a clear line between him and goalkeeper Matt Freese, the only person standing in front of NYCFC's goal. Taking his shot attempt, Freese deflected off his hands Arfsten's shot, and the ball was above striker Cucho Hernandez's head when he took a shot attempt that went above the goal.

Following the fastest goal against the Crew in club history, Columbus was able to even the score 1-1 against New York City FC with a goal from striker Cucho Hernandez in the final five minutes of the half. The Crew took seven shots, three on goal while NYCFC took four shots, two on goal. The possession battle was won by the Crew with 58% possession rate in the first half.

Crew striker Cucho Hernandez was able to find the back of the net for the Crew following three attempts. The header shot came off a cross from midfielder Max Arfsten from the right side of the field and had a bounce in the left corner of the goal after the one touch from Hernandez.

Scoring just 14 seconds into the match, New York City forward Adrian Martinez's goal has officially been confirmed to be the fastest ever against the Crew. Prior to his goal, the fastest goal against Columbus was scored by Edgar Castillo for FC Cincinnati on July 9, 2021.

NYCFC is the first team in the match to receive a yellow card when defender Christian McFarlane was given the violation following a foul against Crew midfielder Mo Farsi.

Christian Ramirez took his first shot attempt of the when he was launched a cross to where he stood inches away from New York City's goal. Looking urgent to make up for the early 1-0 deficit, Ramirez sent a quick shot high above the goal.

Crew striker Cucho Hernandez got his first clear look at the goal from the middle of New York City's box, but the attempt was too far right and ended up back in NYCFC's possession. A minute later, Hernandez had another attempt but kicked that one too far high.

Forward Diego Rossi executed the corner kick for Columbus, sending it into New York City's box, but the ball was deflected before any Crew players could get to it.

Less than 30 seconds into the match, Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte is giving up a goal to New York City's Alonso Martinez. Columbus falls behind 1-0.

Martinez was able to force Crew defender Rudy Camacho to make a turnover after gaining possession off the kickoff, which allowed Martinez to attack the goal with Columbus' defense on his back. With only Schulte to beat, Martinez's shot to the right corner of the goal was easily able to pass the diving goalkeeper.

According to AccuWeather, it is expected to rain, with the possibility of a quick thunderstorm, around 7:00 p.m. in Columbus.
