How to make a King Cake for Fat Tuesday

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - It’s a parade for your taste buds and Tuesday, we’re letting the good times roll with this huge cinnamon roll.

This is no ordinary roll - it’s a cake fit for a king!

Trisha Lang is the owner of Bakers Pride Bakery and she is who you “dough” to when you want something sweet.

And that’s why she’s making a king cake Tuesday.

Believe it or not, 10 years ago... she didn’t even know what a king cake was.

“A customer asked for it and so I looked up to see what it is and I was like yeah we can do that.”

But now she knows... and she even showed how she creates her spin on Louisiana’s royal delicacy.

“The actual shape is a circle, which signifies the route that the three kings looked for the Christ child and the twisted dough braided dough signifies the way they traveled so king Herod could find the baby.”

And after that, the process is simple.

“It proofs all the way to the top. This is just a proofing over. Then we will run it in here with a bunch of other ones and it will be in here for about 28 to 30 minutes.”

Once done baking.. time to decorate! With purple green and gold sugar which have a sweet meaning.

”So this is our glaze and it dries pretty quick..so as we pour it I’m shaking the sugar...the colors stand for wealth justice and power.”

The icing on the cake is that she lets you finish off the final step which is hiding a special surprise to continue the fun for the next person.

“Whoever finds the baby in the king’s cake has to have the party for the next year and also be king for the day.”
