Expelled Lawmaker Justin Jones Is Sworn Back In to Tennessee
Justin Jones, a Democratic Tennessee lawmaker, was recently sworn back in to the state House of Representatives after being expelled for leading a gun control protest on the House floor. Jones was initially removed from the House on a voice vote, but due to the swift rebuke from the Republican supermajority, he was allowed to take the oath of office and was seated in the House.
The gun control protest that started it all was a non-violent demonstration in support of a proposed bill that would prohibit gun ownership by those accused of domestic violence. Jones was one of two lawmakers who staged the protest, and he was the only one to be expelled. The other lawmaker, Gloria Johnson, was sanctioned with a one-day suspension.
This incident has brought attention to the issues of gun control and freedom of speech in the Tennessee House of Representatives. It has also highlighted the power of the Republican supermajority, which has the authority to make decisions that can be overturned by the people.
