JCPenney plans to close eight stores nationwide throughout 2025, but staff at the University Town Plaza location confirmed to the News Journal that they won’t be a part of JCPenney’s store closings plan.

"JCPenney has no plans to close stores in the area at this time, and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers in the Pensacola area," the retailer said in a statement to the News Journal.

Eight states, including California, Colorado and North Carolina, are slated to lose a single JCPenney store this year, but Florida is excluded entirely from the list.

The nationwide retailer has closed 200 locations in the five years since they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but they do not intend to close stores en masse.

Is JCPenney’s Pensacola store closing?

No, JCPenney doesn’t plan to close its only Pensacola-area store at this time.

A full list of store closings planned in 2025 can be found on the website of SB360 Capital Partners, a Massachusetts-based firm that’s working with JCPenney and provides asset recovery, auctions and liquidation services among other capital-related needs.

Is JCPenney going out of business?

JCPenney has shut down 200 locations since they filed for bankruptcy in 2020, but the retailer is not going out of business right now.

Last month, JCPenney partnered with SPARC Group to found Catalyst Brands and bring six “iconic” retail banners including Aéropostale and Nautica under one roof alongside brands like Arizona and Liz Claiborne.
