AMES, Ia. — It’s still a Hawkeye state.
No. 12 Iowa won its sixth-straight game in the Cy-Hawk series knocking off No. 10 Iowa State, 27-17, at Jack Trice Stadium Saturday.
Excitement had been building and building for this year’s matchup which included two ranked teams for the first time in school history.
But Iowa made sure the ending was anticlimactic.
The Hawkeyes defense, which was strong in the season opener against Indiana, dominated again with a barrage of turnovers.

8:30/4Q - Iowa State's offense continues to struggleHunter Dekkers couldn't ignite life into Iowa State. The Cyclones have punted their first two possession with the backup quarterback in the game. Things now starting to slip away from Iowa State.
12:53/4Q - Hunter Dekkers is in the gameThe backup quarterback has taken over for Brock Purdy who has struggled all day. Purdy was picked off three times. One of the interceptions was a pass that went through the hands of wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson. Nonetheless, Iowa State's offense has not been nearly as sharp as it should be the first two games.

12:57/4Q - Iowa settles for another field goalCaleb Shudak connects on a 22-yard field goal to give Iowa a 27-10 lead. Another touchdown could have put the game too far out of reach for Iowa State. That's back-to-back drives for the Hawkeyes that have ended with field goals. It may not matter, though. Iowa State's offensive woes may make it too difficult to get back into the game at this point. We'll see.
End of the 3Q - Iowa 24, Iowa State 10Iowa's lead is about to grow too. The Hawkeyes, who just picked off a third pass from Brock Purdy, are already in Iowa State territory and getting ready to pad their lead. What a day for the Iowa defense.
.45/3Q - Another Iowa turnover. That's 4Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy's pass was tipped and picked off. That's the fourth(!) turnover of the day by the Iowa State. Purdy has been intercepted three times today. And once again, Iowa has fantastic field position.
2:40/3Q - Brock Purdy is still in the gameThat's probably not something that needs to be clarified. But....backup Hunter Dekkers had his helmet on and was warming up on the sidelines. And Purdy has been far from his best today.
2:56/3Q - Iowa takes a 24-10 leadCaleb Shudak booted a 51-yard field goal (no easy task here at Jack Trice Stadium) to give the Hawkeyes a 24-10 lead. That's actually a huge stand for the Cyclones defense which was put in a really tough spot following the Brock Purdy interception. Keeping Iowa out of the end zone was a big win.
4:23/3Q - Another pick by the HawkeyesIowa's defense is no joke. The Hawkeyes just tallied their third turnover of the day. This one was a pick by Seth Benson who gives Iowa great field position at the Iowa State 25-yard line. Another touchdown by Iowa here would seem like too big of a hole for the Cyclones to climb out of.
5:08/3Q - Iowa grabs another turnover and pads its leadIowa grabbed its second turnover of the game and this was a big one. Iowa State running back Breece hall fumbled deep in his team's own territory. Jack Campbell picked it up and basically walked into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. Jestin Jacobs forced the fumble. And now, Iowa has, what it seems like is a commanding 21-10 lead.
5:30/3Q - Iowa misses an opportunity to put the pressure on Iowa StateThe Hawkeyes were marching into Iowa State territory and may have been close to field goal range. But then quarterback Spencer Petras took a costly sack on third down that ended the drive. Let's also talk about the game of Charlie Jones. He's caught two big passes today for 36 yards and a touchdown.
10:25/3Q - A mistake on special teamsThis has been said a few times but the little things are what usually wins this game. Iowa State just made a miscue on special teams again. Iowa's Tory Taylor unleashed a 69-yard punt that could have been caught near the 40-yard line. Instead, Iowa State let it land and it took a Hawkeye hop. The Cyclones then went three and out on offense.
12:15/3Q - Iowa State's first drive of the second half was not good...The Cyclones took one shot down the field but it came incomplete. Quarterback Brock Purdy's pass was wobbly and short of its intended receiver. Purdy has been far from his best today. He's 12-of-23 for 136 yards with the one pick and a couple of bad throws downfield. The most surpassing stat is how little of an impact Breece Hall has had for the second-straight week. He's got just 11 carries for 42 yards.

HALFTIME: Iowa 14, Iowa State 10 After a slow first quarter, things really got exciting in the second quarter. Iowa was on the verge of heading into halftime with a 14-3 lead. But Iowa State responded with a 75-yard scoring drive in just 54 seconds late in the second quarter to get right back into the game. A 49-yard catch-and-run completion to Darren Wilson Jr. spurred the drive. Buckle up for what should be an exciting second half. :07/2Q - Iowa State's quick and impressive driveIowa State had a quick response for Iowa's touchdown. The Cyclones marched 75 yards down the field in just 54 seconds to reach the end zone for the first time today. Breece Hall's plunge to the end zone capped it off. A review confirmed the touchdown. Now Iowa State trails 14-10 at the end of the second quarter.
1:01/2Q - Iowa adds to its leadIowa's final drive of the first one was a big one for the Hawkeyes. It was long, draining and successful. Charlie Jones caught a nice 26-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Petras to give the Hawkeyes a 14-3 lead. The drive spanned 71 yards and took 4:34 off the clock. It nearly came to a halt after Ivory Kelly-Martin coughed up the football. But officials (rightfully) ruled he was down when the ball came out.
5:00/2Q - Iowa winning in the marginsIt's the little things that are usually the difference-maker in Cy-Hawk games, at least recently. Iowa is winning in all those small areas right now. The Hawkeyes are winning the turnover battle and have yet to be penalized. Both are areas that have hurt the Cyclones so far. Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy was picked off earlier in the quarter, which set up Iowa's first touchdown drive. Iowa State has been penalized three times for 20 yards. And a 27-yard punt by Corey Dunn didn't help.
5:45/2Q - Iowa State can't answerIowa State's first series after Iowa took the lead didn't do much. Tight end Charlie Kolar, who missed the first game of the season with an injury, hauled in his first catch of the season with a 15-yard grab. But that's about all Iowa State's offense could do.
8:13/2Q - Iowa takes the lead with a turnover and touchdownThe Hawkeyes took advantage of the Iowa State turnover and the great field position that came with it. They went 49 yards and needed just eight plays to reach the end zone for the first time today. Tyler Goodson finished off the drive with a 4-yard run. The turnover was just what Iowa's offense needed. The Hawkeyes had been having trouble moving the ball but had no issues with this drive. Hawkeyes now lead 7-3.
12:03/2Q - Iowa gets a huge turnoverThe Hawkeyes had plenty of those during their win over Indiana. They got the first today with Matt Hankins picking off a deep pass attempt from Brock Purdy to Xavier Hutchinson. Hankins may have gotten away with a hold but Purdy didn't place the pass in a good spot at all.
12:19/2Q - Another Iowa puntIt has become a theme for the Hawkeyes today who have punted on three of their first four possession's. The non-punt resulted in a missed field goal. Third down has been problematic for the Hawkeyes who are just 1-for-5 so far. Tyler Goodson was the reason for the only conversion. Goodson picked up a nice 7-yard reception and a first down after shaking off a couple of tacklers.
End of the 1st quarter - Iowa State 3, Iowa 0The lone points of the quarter came on a 23-yard field goal by Connor Assalley. Iowa State's last drive was the most impressive. But both teams have struggled to move the ball. The offensive issues have been especially difficult for Iowa which is averaging just 1.3 yards per play.
.39/1Q: - Iowa State strikes firstThe Cyclones take a 3-0 lead on a 23-yard field goal by Connor Assalley. The drive looked much more promising for Iowa State which moved the ball with relative each until it got to the 9-yard line. That's when things stalled out for the Cyclones who were forced to settle for a field goal.
6:07/1Q - A missed opportunity for the HawkeyesIowa kicker Caleb Shudak didn't even come close to hitting a 50-yard field goal attempt. Shudak was put in a tough position after Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras was sacked by Iowa State's Will McDonald for a 4-yard loss. Iowa missed out on an opportunity to strike first with its best field position so far today.
8:29/1Q - It's a hot one out thereThe heat index is 99 degrees. Iowa State has already tried to combat the heat wave by rotating a ton of players in and out. Depth will likely play a huge factor for both teams today.
8:41/1Q - Another quick series for Iowa StateThe Cyclones' second series looked like it may have some promise. Breece Hall, who never really got into a rhythm against Northern Iowa, came close to breaking off a big run. Instead, he stumbled before getting into the open field. A bad snap to Brock Purdy really set the Cyclones back.
10:40/1Q - Iowa's offense struggling to get goingThe Hawkeyes open the game with a pair of three and outs. The Hawkeyes have tallied just 12 yards of total offense so far. Even worse: Iowa's run game is struggling to get going, averaging just 2.3 yards per game. That'll be a key number to keep an eye on all day.
12:31/1Q - If you like punting...You're tuning into the right game. There's sure to be plenty of it with a pair of stingy defenses and two coaches who love finding edges in field position. Both teams have traded punts to start the game. And both teams have unleashed mammoth punts early on. Corey Dunn just booted a 56-yarder for Iowa State. Iowa's Tory Taylor let loose on a 58-yarder before that.
13:43/1Q - Iowa's first series goes nowhereIowa's first offensive series was a quick three and out. Tyler Goodson had a carry. Spencer Petras tossed a 5-yard pass. And that was it. The good news for the Hawkeyes: A 58-yard punt pins Iowa State deep on its own 8-yard line to start the game.
3:37 p.m. - Pre-game tributeWe're just minutes away from pre-game. Iowa State a flyover and a moment of silence to honor the victims of 9/11. There was also a tribute to former Iowa State athlete Mari-Rae Sopper who died during the attacks.
3:15 p.m. - Another packed stadiumThe first two games of the season are sellouts for Iowa State. We're still over an hour before game time but Jack Trice Stadium is filling fast. Many fans have been here since early in the morning for ESPN's "College GameDay" visit to Ames.
3 p.m. - Sean Shaw Jr. possibly good to goThe Iowa State wide receiver missed the season opener with an injury. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell wouldn't commit to Shaw's availability for Saturday's game but may be good to go. He's suited up and going through warmups right now.
2:52 p.m. - Iowa State linebacker O'Rien Vance not suiting upVance suffered an injury in the second half of the Northern Iowa game and did not return. Looks like he won't be back for the Iowa game, either. Vance isn't even suiting up. Gerry Vaughn will likely take his starting spot. Vaughn filled in for Vance last week and was praised by Iowa State coach Matt Campbell after the game.
2:38 p.m. - An early observation of Iowa's special teamsSpecial teams has typically played a big role in the outcome of the Cy-Hawk game. Today could be no different. Here's a good sign for Iowa's special teams group. Iowa kicker Caleb Shudak has looked sharp in warmups.
2:26 p.m. - Lots of important eyes are on hand for today's gameA long list of NFL teams have spots set up in the press box. The Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers are all listed. 2:20 p.m. - Charlie Kolar could be good to goIowa State's All-American tight end missed the season opener against Northern Iowa with an injury. Kolar did suit for last week's game and Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said he nearly did play. Looks like he should be good to go for Saturday's showdown.
2:18 p.m. - Iowa injury updatesOur Iowa columnist Chad Leistikow reports some good news on the injury front for the Hawkeyes. Wide receiver/kick returner/punt returner Charlie Jones appears good to go. So does center Tyler Linderbaum who suffered an injury scare in last week’s win over Indiana.
