Good Burger 2 Officially Ordered By Paramount Plus For Late 2023

Good Burger 2 will come 26 years after the first.

Good Burger 2 is finally moving forward. The film is the oft-teased and long-awaited follow-up to the 1997 film Good Burger, which starred Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell as wacky fast food employees Dexter and Ed. The characters and the concept were born in a sketch on the Nickelodeon young adult comedy series All That and despite the film being a mild theatrical success it developed an increasing cult following in the years after its theatrical release.

Per Variety, it was announced on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that Good Burger 2 has finally been given the green light, with both Kenan and Kel set to reprise their roles. The film will follow Dexter in dire straits after another failed invention, leading him to take back his old job at Good Burger, where Ed works with a brand new crew. The film is set to go into production this May with an eye on a late 2023 release date on Paramount+.

Paramount Plus is Doubling Down on Reboots, For Better or Worse

The Good Burger sequel is part of a long chain of legacy sequels, reboots, and revivals on Paramount+. The streaming service includes library titles and originals using the IP derived from quite a few companies, including CBS, MTV, and Nickelodeon. Good Burger 2 is squarely in the Nickelodeon camp, which has paid dividends for the streaming service in the past.

Previous successful revivals on the Nickelodeon end include the iCarly reboot, which has been renewed for an upcoming season 3, as well as the animated series Rugrats and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. Good Burger 2 will be joining a slate that also includes a Zoey 101 sequel film, showing Paramount+'s commitment to using their core IP to draw viewership. This makes sense for a service that was built on the back of the spinoffs Star Trek: Discovery and The Good Fight.

However, Good Burger 2 may be coming at a time that their glut of reboots is reaching an oversaturation point. Some of their rebooted titles have flopped either critically or commercially, including the blended live-action and CGI animation series The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder and the horror sequel Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. With so many similar titles on the platform, it may be difficult for this new film to stand out.
