The August full moon is set to make its appearance on Wednesday night of August 30, 2023.

It will be situated directly opposite the Sun's position in Earth-based longitude, manifesting at 21:36 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Coinciding with this celestial event, the planet Saturn, on the cusp of reaching its nearest and brightest point for the year, will share proximity with the Moon.

As twilight transitions into nighttime, Saturn will be positioned about five degrees to the upper right of the Moon. Over the course of the evening, Saturn will seemingly trace a clockwise path around the Moon.

The full Moon will be visually complete for approximately three days encompassing its peak, spanning from Tuesday night through to Friday morning.

This occurrence is characterized as a supermoon.

While different criteria are employed to determine what qualifies as a "super" Moon, consensus is reached that both of the full Moons in August 2023 meet the criteria.

Where to see blue moon August 2023

Adding another layer of distinction, this full Moon is the second to grace August, fitting the definition of a Blue Moon based on the modern classification established by Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946.

In contrast, the more traditional definition of a Blue Moon, with origins dating back to at least the 1500s, refers to the third full Moon within a season containing four Moons.

Following sunset on Wednesday, the Super Blue Moon will ascend in the eastern horizon from the perspective of New York City.

Should unfavorable conditions impede moon observation in your locale, an alternative is at hand.

The Virtual Telescope Project, spearheaded by astronomer Gianluca Masi from Rome, Italy, is set to host a complimentary livestream of the event, commencing at 23:30 ET on August 30. This livestream can be accessed through Space.com, courtesy of the project, or via the project's YouTube channel.
