As you take your first steps out into Embervale, the open world becomes yours to explore. While you're given some handy tips to get started and tutorials can be accessed from your Journal, there's still lots that Enshrouded doesn't tell you. To help with this, we've compiled a list of information we think is important for the best gameplay experience.

Things Enshrouded Doesn't Tell You

  • The threat level of the Shroud differs across Embervale. While exploring, you’ll slowly uncover the map and be able to see where the patches of Shroud are. There are two colors used to show the Shroud on the map, which are red and blue. Blue Shroud can be entered and you’ll be protected inside it for a certain amount of time (depending on your Shroud Passage Level). Red Shroud, on the other hand, is Deadly Shroud, and stepping into it will kill you within seconds.

  • Upgrade your Flame Altar to increase your Shroud Passage Level. To do this requires Sacrificial Offerings in the form of various materials. One of these is a Fell Thunderbrute Head, which you can earn just a few quests into the game when you Clear the Elixir Well.
  • Sparks are also needed to strengthen the flame at your Flame Altar. To collect Sparks, visit Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums. These can be used more than once, however, so when you need Sparks, be sure to hit up as many as possible.
  • You can build and landscape outside of your base, but these adjustments will only last temporarily. It’s sometimes necessary to excavate or use bombs to destroy large areas to find ores or hidden chests as part of side quests. After a while, the destruction you’ve caused will be reset -- which is handy when you need to come back and mine for ores again.

  • Even when you’ve brought survivors back from Ancient Vaults, you won’t always have access to their full abilities right away. To expand their workshops and the crafting recipes they can offer you, you’ll need to complete side quests for them and retrieve key items or materials.
  • There are no set classes as such, but the skill tree does divide points into specific roles. As you unlock them, you’ll want to carefully pair skills together for the best buffs that work for your playstyle and equipment. If it’s not working out for you, or you want to swap your equipment and need a different set of skills, you can easily reset everything -- and it’s not costly, either.
  • Unlocking Ancient Spires as part of the main questline will create a Fast Travel point and reveal the nearby Flame Sanctums and Elixir Wells. Meanwhile, Ancient Obelisks can be read to find out the locations of hidden Flame Shrines and Shroud Roots.
  • Each time you take down a Shroud Root in an Elixir Well you’ll gain a skill point. If you’re playing multiplayer, this skill point will be available to all Flameborn in the Elixir Well. Shroud Roots also come back, but only those who haven’t already taken a skill point from it will earn one if it’s destroyed again.
  • Materials and resources must be in your backpack if you want to use them for crafting. When you rescue the Carpenter from one of the Ancient Vaults later on, however, you’ll be able to make Magic Chests. This will enable you to craft with any available resources and materials that are stored in your base -- so no more back and forth between your Craftspeople and your storage!
  • You can have multiple active Flame Altars at one time. Flame Altars can be built with just 5 Stones, so make the most of the limit and set these up as Fast Travel points. This will help you explore more of the map until you unlock Ancient Spires. When you no longer need a Flame Altar, interact with it and select Extinguish to remove it.
  • You can see all of the crafting recipes you can currently make by checking your Journal. If you go to Workshops, and then click on each of the Craftspeople and the equipment you currently have, you’ll be able to see a quick list of all the things each one can provide.
  • Some of the Craftspeople have equipment that behaves like a factory. You deposit all the necessary materials and resources, then select the recipe you want the factory to create. When it’s ready, you don’t need to collect it - the factory will store all the completed recipes until you need them, so use the equipment as additional storage.
  • A Wand doesn’t need ammunition or Mana to be used. You can craft it by using 2x Bones, which you can get from animals or skeletons. A Staff, however, does require the use of Mana and Spell Charges.
  • You can have up to 3 Food Effects active at once. These will show on the top-left corner of your screen and can be viewed from the Status Details under the Character Menu. When some of these Food Effects are active, they’ll also influence your Attribute points. For example, when you’ve had some water, your Stamina Recharge will increase, but you’ll also gain an Endurance point.
  • In your Journal, you’ll find the Lore section under Personal Knowledge. This is where all of the Lore Pages you discover across Embervale will be stored. You’ll find these pages in camps, Ancient Spires, and generally in the wild. They can be identified by a reddish glowing hue. Picking up these pages won’t just provide you with lore about Embervale, but they’ll also mark your map with icons that show where you can find hidden treasures, side quests you can take on, or provide general guidance for surviving.
