England vs Germany result highlights analysis as Three Lions sign off with thrilling 33 draw ahead of World Cup
England and Germany played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League.

WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON — England's final match before they head to the World Cup in Qatar later this year saw Gareth Southgate's side sign off with a thrilling 3-3 draw against rivals Germany at Wembley.

Despite England's relegation from the UEFA Nations League being confirmed against Italy, goals from Luke Shaw and Mason Mount and Harry Kane tonight provided some cheers for Three Lions fans, despite Southgate's current run of six matches without a victory.

The home team thought they had pulled off a remarkable second-half comeback after scoring three goals in just 11 minutes. Kai Havertz scored his second goal of the night at the end.

England reached half-time after a quiet first half. It was 495 minutes without scoring a goal. Raheem Sterling had two of the best chances to end that miserable stat, however.

Soon after the break, things got worse when Harry Maguire conceded an inconsolable penalty. Jamal Musiala tried to dribble past Maguire after he had initially given the ball away sloppily within his own box. Although initially waved off, VAR intervened to award a penalty. Ilkay Gundogan was able to cooly slot past Nick Pope in the bottom right corner.

Havertz added another. He smashed a brilliant shot with the left foot from the box's edge on 67 minutes. England fans finally had something to celebrate when Luke Shaw, who was bundled home from behind the post, soon after.

Southgate had already seen England needed new legs before Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka were introduced. They danced past the German midfielders before Mount delicately laid off a pass for Mount to rifle a shot above Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

The turnaround was complete when Nico Schlotterbeck crunched Bellingham into the box. VAR intervened again and a penalty was given. Kane made no mistakes from the spot to send home fans into a frenzy.

It wasn't the best World Cup send-off, however. Havertz ruined the party by taping home from within six yards of Pope's shot from 20 meters.

The Sporting News was following the match live and providing live score updates, commentary throughout.

Havertz scores his second goal of the night. Pope parries Gnabry’s shot from 20 yards. He'll regret that one.

84th min: GOAL! England 3-2 Germany

Despite Ter Stegen's error, Kane flies it to the top left of goal. Wow!

82nd minute: Penalty England Nico Schlotterbeck crunches Bellingham in the box. The referee's decision is changed by a VAR check. The referee gives the defender a yellow card.

79th minute:Thomas Muller has been called for Musiala. England is pushing for a winner and the crowd is making their voices heard.

75th min: GOAL! England 2-2 Germany

72nd min: GOAL! England 1-2 Germany

Shaw is unmarked at Ter Stegen's back post and manages it through Ter Stegen. England's goal drought is over

69th minute:Serge Gnabry, Robin Gosens are available for Sane or Raum.

67th min: GOAL! England 0-2 Germany

Kai Havertz lifts one with his left foot, from the right side to the top corner of the box. He spent so much time at the box's edge. After Maguire lost the ball at the opposite end of the pitch, England's defense was in disarray.

64th minute:Double Change for England as Mason Mount, Bukayo Saka come on to Foden and Sterling

62nd minute:Another great chance for visitors! Werner is able to take a shot on the left, but he doesn't get it far enough.

51st min: Maguire gives the ball away sloppily and the Manchester United defender then trips Jamal Musiala in the box when one on one. The referee waved it away initially, but VAR intervened and it's a stonewall violation upon replays. Germany Penalty.

49th minute: Sterling tries to whip one into the bottom left corner of the goal. This goal, however, isn't as successful as the one he scored against Leicester last season. It barely bothers the keeper.

We are now in the second half! Germany has one change as Timo Werner replaces Jonas Hofmann.

HALF TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 GERMANY

45th min +2: Joshua Kimmich drills a low shot the edge of the box that has Pope at full stretch but it goes just wide of the post.

43rd minute: Another huge opportunity goes begging for England, and it's Sterling once again. Kane is the Chelsea forward from the left, and his first attempt from close range is straight at Terstegen.

38th min: England showcase their speed on the counter with Sterling running at pace with the ball and Shaw even quicker on the overlap but his cross can't find the box.

36th minute: Stones is down and seems to be holding his right hip. He's now ready to go for Kyle Walker.

34th minute: England are now putting on pressure from Germany. The Three Lions have now played over 300 minutes without scoring...

31st min: A heart in mouth moment there for Wembley as Thilo Kehrer went down in the box under a challenge from Sterling but referee Danny Makkelie waves it away. Replays show a slight shirt tug, but not enough to merit a penalty. It was close.

27th minute: England has another chance as Kane finds space and attempts an audacious volley, but it goes wide.

25th min: Germany have had 65% possession so far but then England come so close to opening the scoring! Luke Shaw plays a brilliant curled through ball into Sterling who cuts back inside two men in the middle of the box, but his shot is well saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen who gets down quickly to his right.

22nd minute: A few sketchy back passes within a short time find their way back towards Nick Pope, but the goalkeeper does a good job of clearing his lines.

21st minute:Jude Bellingham has been proving to be a beast in the middle, winning a free kick after being clattered on his left wing.

17th minute: Germany receive a free kick in a dangerous place on the box's edge from a James foul. Leroy Sane's attempt is straight into the wall.

14th minute: Harry Maguire fails at clearing his lines by the corner flag, before making amends with another block. England wins though.

12th min: Ilkay Gundoğan has the first shot of the match, but his first-time effort from the edge of the box goes well over.

10th minute:Germany gets the first corner of ball. However, David Raum's set piece is too hard and Declan Rice wins the ball at the backpost. Sterling then plays a magnificent through ball to Declan Rice. But the move soon falls apart.

8th minute: Foden grabs a loose ball in the centre circle and drives towards Germany's centre backs before passing to Kane on his right. Foden and Raheem sterling get into the box, but the Tottenham striker's cross is missed by everyone.

5th minute: A cagey start so far. Kane has to drop quite deep into the centre circle in order to get the ball for his team.

2nd Min: Reece James links with Kane down right side, but Kane's cross is blocked.

We're underway!

2 mins from kickoff: National anthems and handshakes complete, here we go. Here's a quick reminder of the starting lineups for both teams.

England starrting lineup: Pope (GK) — Maguire, Dier Stones, — Shaw, Bellingham, Rice, James — Sterling, Kane, Foden

Germany starting lineup: Ter Stegen (GK) — Raum, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Kehrer — Gundogan, Kimmich — Sane, Musiala Hofmann, — Havertz

5 minutes before kickoff: The players are in the tunnel. The rain is holding off, but football's coming home is being played on the tannoy. Wembley isn't quite full yet, but the last few supporters have taken their seats. We have a few more minutes to go!

15 mins from kickoff: A few words from England captain Harry Kane ahead of kickoff.

"We need more clinical. We were able to get into some good areas in Friday's match against Italy, but we didn't have the final run, pass or finish. He said that in these big games, those are the fine margins." he told Channel 4.

"It [not scoring] has been frustrating for certain. As all attacking players, I love scoring goals. We haven't been able do that well in England. We will not lose heart and continue to work hard.

"It is great seeing all the fans here. We want to start well, and we need to play well on and off the ball. Goals create happy fans, so that is our goal.

Another chapter in a rivalry running deep ????????????????????????????????????????

30 mins from kickoff: A few stats to get your teeth stuck into then...

Germany is unbeaten in six of their last six away matches against England (W5,D1), ending a streak of five consecutive wins for the hosts [Not including Euro 2020].

England is without a win in five matches (D2,L3) for the first-time since June 2014. They also failed to score in three consecutive internationals for only the third time since November 2000.

The Three Lions have not had a longer winless streak since April-June 1993. Only once in their history has the team failed to score in four consecutive games (April-May 1981).

45 minutes from kickoff: What happened the last time these two countries met?

The reverse Nations League fixture at Allianz Arena in June ended in 1-1 draw. Jonas Hofmann's opening goal was cancelled out by Harry Kane's penalty in the 88th minute.

England has the psychological advantage because England won the European Championships last season with a famous 2-0 win. Kane scored again, adding to Raheem's goal with a second goal in the second-half.

60 minutes from kickoff: The teams are in!

Southgate makes two changes to the defeat in Italy, with John Stones (and Luke Shaw) replacing Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka.

There are four changes in Germany's side that lost against Hungary, with Thilo Kehrer (Kai Havertz), Jamal Musiala (Jamal Musiala) and Nico Schlotterbeck getting the nod.

All but Timo Werner, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller have dropped out.

75 minutes from kickoff: Germany's first defeat under Hansi Flip was a shock to their system. Their struggles in front of the goal are not surprising. They took them 37 minutes to score a goal against the Hungarians. Timo Werner was at the front of that one. Kai Havertz will get the nod tonight. There are options for forward positions as well, including Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller.

90 minutes before kickoff: Much of the talk about tonight's match revolves around the boos Southgate received as well as the criticisms of his recent performances.

Southgate stated that "the results haven’t been at the level that we want, and that we require." This is true regardless of what job you have as a footballer.

"Of course, with the national team that noise will be louder and wider - I get that.

"I'm not hiding it. It is not enjoyable, but we must continue to do the right things every single day to improve.

Southgate has asked supporters to give England fans a good farewell, as this is the last chance to see their side before they travel to Qatar in November.

“We’ve got 90,000 people, the stadium’s sold out,” Southgate said ahead of Monday’s Group A3 encounter. “People want to come and see this team play.

“I would urge the supporters to get behind the team. I am not happy with how they deal with me at end, or any other time, on the phone-ins, or anything else.

“But this is their last chance to see the boys before they go to the World Cup and we’re all in it together.

“We can only succeed if we’re all pushing in the same direction and we’ve all got that positive energy towards doing well.

“What happens to me is irrelevant, frankly. It’s about the team. The most important thing is the team and the success of the team.”

Kickoff time: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage from England vs. Germany. After the Three Lions' relegation, it's rare that these two rivals meet in a match. However, tonight's match will be dominated by pride and the final World Cup preparations of both teams. This should make for fascinating viewing.

Our home.
