Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Donald Trump Securing ...
Washington, DC — Today, former President Donald Trump officially secured the GOP nomination for president in 2024.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Donald Trump is the biggest threat to reproductive freedom and our democracy that our country has faced in generations. In his first term, he stacked the courts with extremist judges and overturned Roe. The very real dangers of a second term for Trump are clear. We must reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris to restore our rights and safeguard our democracy.”
Reproductive Freedom for All announced an early endorsement of the Biden-Harris ticket last June alongside Planned Parenthood Votes and EMILYs List. As Republican politicians endanger the health and lives of millions of Americans with abortion bans, fight laws meant to ensure patients facing emergencies can access care, threaten people who miscarry with jail time, and declare their support for a nationwide ban, the only way to restore our rights and freedoms is by reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris. This administration has done more to defend reproductive freedom and expand abortion access than any other in history—from establishing the Reproductive Rights Task Force to championing the restoration of the federal right to abortion to putting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court, and so much more.
A second Trump presidency would give Donald Trump another opportunity to do untold damage to our fundamental rights. Anti-abortion groups—who teamed up with Trump during his last administration to overturn Roe and decimate reproductive freedom—have partnered with other conservatives to create a lengthy agenda that he could begin launching on Day One of his administration. Those plans offer Trump a laundry list of options to attack abortion rights and access, including reviving the so-called domestic gag rule, deploying the Federal Trade Commission to penalize and prosecute virtual clinics that prescribe abortion pills to people in states with bans, attempting to wilfully misinterpret and misuse the antiquated Comstock Act to block access to both abortion pills and medical equipment used for abortion care, and rescinding all of the policies the Biden-Harris administration enacted that expanded abortion access.
Donald Trump’s work to end access to abortion and undermine reproductive freedom is undeniable:
- During his presidency, Trump stacked the federal judiciary with conservative ideologues and built the anti-abortion supermajority on the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion.
- Trump installed anti-abortion extremists in key leadership roles throughout his administration, including Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Health and Human Services Secretaries Tom Price and Alex Azar, former Director of the Office of Civil Rights Roger Severino, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
- He put the harmful domestic gag rule in place. This anti-abortion policy decimated the Title X family planning network by forcing many health care providers out of the program who—in addition to other services—provided abortion care. The restriction also prohibited Title X providers from referring for abortion care, even when patients requested the information.
- Trump didn’t just reinstate the anti-abortion global gag rule—he expanded it. Though previous Republican presidents have applied the policy, the Trump administration’s version greatly expanded it to apply to organizations receiving any U.S. global health assistance.
Reproductive Freedom for All is already on the ground in states across the country as part of its largest-ever electoral program, working to ensure reproductive freedom champions are elected from statehouses to the White House and that we protect and expand abortion rights and access through ballot measures. Our 2024 program connects voters with opportunities to make immediate, tangible change to help build a future where everyone is free to make their own decisions about their bodies, lives, and families. The program focuses on engaging members and voters — and especially Gen Z, young Black voters, and young voters of color — through digital and relational organizing, deep field investments, robust accountability and communications programs, on-the-ground support in key races and ballot initiatives, and more.
