Statement from Secretary Mayorkas on Fifth Circuit Ruling Regarding DACA
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released the following statement regarding today’s ruling on the DACA:
“I am deeply disappointed by today’s DACA ruling and the ongoing uncertainty it creates for families and communities across the country. We are currently reviewing the court’s decision and will work with the Department of Justice on an appropriate legal response.
“As a result of the stay that remains in place, no one who currently has DACA will lose their protection from removal or work authorization. DHS will continue to process renewal requests for DACA, but not initial DACA applications.
“In August, DHS issued a final rule to preserve and fortify DACA, recognizing that it has transformed the lives of so many Dreamers who have enriched our nation through their contributions. However, it is clear that legislation is required to provide full protection and a path to citizenship for DACA recipients. I urge Congress to swiftly pass legislation to provide permanent protection to the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who call the United States home.”
