Cubs pitcher Drew Smyly was on his way to making franchise history when a collision with catcher Yan Gomes ended his bid for a perfect game. Smyly had retired the first 19 batters he faced in a game against the Washington Nationals, but Gomes broke up the perfect game with a single in the seventh inning. Despite the loss, Smyly's performance was impressive, as he struck out 10 batters in six and two-thirds innings.
