Is Conclave Streaming How To Watch OscarNominated movie
Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini scored Oscars nominations for their performances in the Edward Berger film.

"Conclave" scored eight Oscars nominations on Jan. 23, including nods for best picture, best actor and best actress.

The film stars Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini, both of whom were nominated for actor in a leading role and actress in a supporting role, respectively.

While some fans felt director Edward Berger was snubbed for a nomination for best director, the film rounded out nominations in other categories like adapted screenplay, original score, costume design and production design.

In the movie, Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) oversees the conclave, in which Catholicism's most powerful leaders vote for a new pope. And with each round of voting, Lawrence uncovers more and more secrets about some of the world's most holy men.

As several cardinals get taken out of the running from skeletons in their closet, only one man will be chosen as pope. But is he even the person his fellow cardinals think they know?

Fiennes previously told TODAY.com about what he thinks the film asks of viewers to consider during the selection of a new pope.

“I think the film asks the question: Who is the person that is best? Who is the right person to take this extraordinary position of spiritual leadership? And what we want them to be spiritually, to have a great spiritual foundation as a person. In the course of the film, I think we understand that person gets there,” Fiennes previously told TODAY.com in October 2024.

Rossellini, who plays Sister Agnes and won her first Oscars nomination ever for the role, previously told TODAY.com about how her own upbringing inspired how she portrayed her character.

“I went to school with the nuns. I grew up in Rome, so the Vatican and the debate of the Vatican are very present. I knew that they were conservative and progressive people. I knew of scandals, I knew of non-scandals. I knew of saints and I knew of sinners, all within the Catholic Church,” Rossellini said.

“But I also knew that my nuns, although they decided to be nuns, and they accept the role of the patriarchal society of the Catholic Church, they are not submissive at all. So I felt very confident in playing sister Agnes with a lot of dignity and strength, because I’d seen it in my life,” she added.
