Cake Boss Buddy Valastro describes his bloody hand injury It just blew out half of my hand
Buddy "Cake Boss" Valastro described on "Today" how an accident at his bowling alley left him severely injured. "It just blew out half of my hand."

"Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro spoke at length Monday about a "terrible accident" at his home bowling alley where his right hand was impaled.

Valastro, star of TLC's "Cake Boss" and owner of Carlo's Bake Shop, appeared on "Today" for his first interview since the accident at his home in Montville, New Jersey, where he described his sons springing into action to help free him from the pinsetter that trapped his hand, eventually requiring two emergency surgeries.

"It just blew out half of my hand," Valastro told "Today."

He went on to say that his right hand, his dominant hand, was stuck in a "fork" in the machine and then punctured by a blunt metal rod.

"I thought I was going to faint," Valastro said in the interview. "I looked at my hand and there was blood everywhere."

Valastro told his sons to get a saw and pliers. His two sons and and brother-in-law were able to remove a bolt and free his hand after five minutes, he said, although there was still a metal piece wedged in his hand.

His teenage son, Buddy Jr., acted quickly, despite some members of his family being scared. "He's my dad, I knew I had to do something," Buddy Jr. said in the interview.

Valastro became when he thought of how his sons helped, despite the scary situation.

"I can't imagine that they had to go through this and did what they did," Valastro said.

Valastro did not give a timetable on when he thought he would recover, but said it would be an "uphill battle" to get back to baking.

He thanked the first responders and doctors who he called "miracle workers" for his emergency treatment: "It makes me want to fight to get better for them."
