Aston Villa and Liverpool played out an exciting 2-2 draw at Villa Park, with the Premier League leaders only able to extend their lead at the top to eight points, having played a game more than Arsenal.

Mohamed Salah gave the visitors the lead with his 24th league goal of the season, but Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins turned things around for Villa before half-time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold equalised in the second half but neither side were able to push on and win the game on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool remain unbeaten in 14 away games in the league this season (W9 D5), while Villa haven’t lost at home since being beaten by Arsenal in August.

Things were looking good for the leaders when Salah put them ahead just before the half-hour mark. Andrés García gifted the ball to Diogo Jota, who ran into the penalty area and squared for the Egyptian to fire high into the net.

Salah became the first Liverpool player to score 15 away Premier League goals in a season, breaking Luis Suárez’s record of 14 in 2013-14.

However, Villa were level less than 10 minutes later, when Tielemans took advantage of Liverpool’s inability to clear a free-kick and fired through a crowd and into the net.

Things got even better for the hosts in first-half stoppage time, with Watkins playing a pass to Lucas Digne, before getting into the box to head the subsequent cross past Alisson to give Villa the lead.

It was the first time Liverpool have scored first and gone in at half-time behind in the Premier League since July 2020 vs Arsenal.

Liverpool pushed to respond in the second half, with Jota hitting the bar just before the hour mark, but less than two minutes later, the Reds were level. Alexander-Arnold ran into the Villa half with the ball before passing to Salah. He received it back on the edge of the box before firing a shot towards goal, which deflected off Tyrone Mings and looped in.

Salah’s assist meant he became the first player with 15+ goals (24) and 15+ assists (15) in a Premier League season since Eden Hazard in 2018-19 (16 goals, 15 assists).

The assumption was that Liverpool would push on from there, but substitute Darwin Núñez had their last effort at goal in the 69th minute when he smashed a golden opportunity over the bar after Dominik Szoboszlai unselfishly squared to him.

It was Villa who came closest to winning it late on, with Donyell Malen shooting just wide of the far post in the closing seconds, but both had to settle for a point apiece.
