Steve Sarkisian shuts down Arch Manning talk: 'We're rolling with ...
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian isn't entertaining any quarterback drama ahead of this weekend's highly anticipated Red River Rivalry game against the strong>Oklahoma Sooners. Despite Arch Manning's impressive performances in the last two games, Sarkisian has made it clear-Quinn Ewers is the starter, no ifs, ands, or Mannings about it.
When asked if Manning might see some situational snaps, Sarkisian was quick to shut down the speculation. "When I was a starter, I never wanted the backup coming in, even for a play. I've got respect for the rhythm that a starting quarterback needs. So, no, that's not something I've ever entertained," Sarkisian told reporters.
With that statement, any lingering hopes of a quarterback controversy were swiftly put to rest. Ewers, who missed two games due to an abdominal injury, reclaimed his role under center when Texas faced Oklahoma.
Fans want to see more of Manning
His return, however, hasn't stopped some fans from advocating for more Arch Manning, especially after the sophomore phenom completed 70% of his passes, throwing 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions during Ewers' absence. Manning's stellar performances had many wondering if the young star could steal the job permanently.
But Sarkisian isn't budging. While praising Manning's development, the head coach emphasized that Ewers' experience and consistency are what the team needs right now.
"Arch wants to learn and grow, and he's done just that. From where he was a year and a half ago to now, it's a credit to his work ethic," Sarkisian said. Still, for 2024, the team is sticking with Ewers, who has completed 73% of his passes with eight touchdowns and two interceptions so far this season.
Arch will have its chance in 2025
Manning will have to stay patient, with his real chance likely coming in 2025 after Ewers graduates. For now, Sarkisian is betting on Ewers, who is already being hyped as a potential top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, along with Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Carson Beck.
As is usual, Ewers stole the show in the game against No. 18 Oklahoma. But if the hype around Arch Manning is any indication, this won't be the last time Texas fans are clamoring to see him on the field.
