Anderson Silva steps in boxing ring, beats former champ Julio César Chávez Jr.

Lance Pugmire, senior boxing writer: The fraudulent career of Chávez Jr. ever since he wore a middleweight belt reached its ultimate low Saturday when he was picked upon and taunted by UFC legend Silva. Chávez Jr., after being so inactive in getting routed by Canelo Alvarez and then coming in overweight against Daniel Jacobs, descended to a punchline in a laugher of an event. To the question of, “How much cash can you milk out of your legendary father’s name?” the answer should forever be, “Ask Julio César Chávez Jr.”

Pugmire: Silva has longed to participate in a boxing match and he took that discipline of MMA so seriously during the height of his career. That’s what helped make him the sport’s former pound-for-pound king and long-reigning middleweight champion. He could kick (ask Vitor Belfort), expose you on the canvas (ask Chael Sonnen) and he had hands. Silva’s celebration featuring a visit from Canelo was validation for his long-denied interest in The Sweet Science.
