Team USA has suffered its first loss of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, falling to Lithuania in the final game of group play. The game was purely for seeding purposes, as both teams will advance to the quarterfinals, which begin on Tuesday.
Lithuania enjoyed a red-hot night from deep, opening the game by sinking each of its first nine 3-point attempts and finishing 14-of-25 overall (56 percent) from beyond the arc. Lithuania was dominant on the boards, outrebounding Team USA 43-27 and grabbing 18 offensive boards.
Anthony Edwards was Team USA’s biggest star, scoring a game-high 35 points on 14-of-26 shooting, while Lithuania’s balanced effort saw seven players finish in double figures, led by 15 points from Vaidas Kariniauskas.
On Tuesday, Team USA will face Italy in the quarterfinals, while Lithuania will take on Serbia. The Sporting News tracked live updates from Team USA's first loss of the tournament.

Team USA plays great defense, but it gets a tough break as Mindaugs Kuzminskas beats the shot clock buzzer with a 3-pointer to put Lithuania back up by nine with just over three minutes left.

Anthony Edwards leads the way with 20 points, while Mikal Bridges is up to 11 points, stepping up in big spots on the offensive end. Also stepping up offensively for Team USA is Brandon Ingram, who has eight points in the game.
Lithuania is 1-of-11 from deep after hitting its first nine attempts of the game, but it has 17 offensive rebounds, creating plenty of second chances.
9:50 a.m. — Lithuania has responded. Its lead is back out to eight points, but it feels like this game will be tightly contested.

It's now a 13-2 run for the Americans through the first four minutes of the second half, and the deficit is down to six points. Anthony Edwards is up to 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Jalen Brunson has set the table with seven assists.

9:40 a.m. — Team USA is trying to chip away at this deficit. A quick 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the second half has cut the deficit to nine points.
