Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse football team takes on the Purdue Boilermakers at 12 p.m. Saturday in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Final score: Syracuse 32, Purdue 29

Syracuse moves to 3-0 in dramatic fashion, knocking off Purdue in a back-and-forth fourth-quarter classic.

Garrett Shrader connected with Oronde Gadsden for the game-winning 25-yard touchdown pass with 7 seconds remaining.

Syracuse needed everything to get by Purdue: A blocked extra point, a defense touchdown and its quarterback authoring another game-winning drive when it counted most.

It wasn’t all pretty, but Shrader finished 13-for-29 for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Two went to Gadsden, who finished with a career-high 112 receiving yards on six catches.

The Orange hosts Virginia next Friday with a chance to move to 4-0 on the year.

Fourth quarter

SCORE UPDATE: Syracuse 32, Purdue 29 with 7 seconds left

Syracuse drive starts 0:45 at own 50-yard line

Syracuse has all three timeouts. Jackson’s return out to midfield gives it a chance.

Shrader’s first pass is incomplete. On second down, Shrader looks toward Jones, but the pass is batted down. Crowd wanted a flag.

On 3rd-and-10 from midfield: Shrader eludes pressure and has to throw it away.

Defensive holding gives SU an automatic first down at the Purdue 40-yard line with 28 seconds to go.

Shrader has to throw it away after being flushed from the pocket to his right.

With 22 seconds to go, Shrader throw it up to Damien Alford, who high points the catch down at the Purdue 16-yard line. Officials will review with 17 seconds left on the clock. Syracuse still has three timeouts remaining.

The catch is overturned.

On the next play, Shrader goes up top to Jones, who draws a defensive pass interference call. Jones comes off the field holding his right arm.

Syracuse sets up 1st-and-10 from the 25-yard line with 12 seconds left.

Shrader then goes deep to Gadsden, who hauls in the 25-yard touchdown catch in the end zone to give SU the lead with 7 seconds left.

Purdue drive starts 2:30 at own 44-yard line

In the final minute, O’Connell finds his tight end for their second touchdown hookup today.

What a drive by Purdue, who played it perfectly to stop the clock and hold SU’s offense in check to give O’Connell the ball back with a chance to take a late lead.

Purdue will start 5 yards closer after the illegal formation on the punt team. That’s the second such penalty on the Orange today.

Purdue gives it right back on the first snap: False start.

O’Connell goes over the middle to TJ Sheffield, then goes back to Charlie Jones for back-to-back first downs.

Mikel Jones gets free with pressure on the QB, and the throw is too far. O’Connell can’t connect with Burks, and it brings up third down.

On 3rd-and-10 from the SU 44-yard line, O’Connell goes back to Burks, who slips Chestnut’s tackle and scampers down to the SU 14-yard line.

Purdue is well within field-goal range and is thinking touchdown here with just more than a minute to play.

Syracuse drive starts 2:53 at own 23-yard line

Syracuse struggling to chew up time here. Shrader’s throw on second down is incomplete, bringing up 3rd-and-15.

Syracuse concedes the drive and runs Tucker. Purdue uses its final timeout of the half to stop the clock at 2:37.

Purdue drive starts 4:53 at own 20-yard line

Wax’s pressure on O’Connell brings up 3rd-and-5 from the 25-yard line: O’Connell delivers an on-target throw downfield to Charlie Jones that covers 51 yards down to the SU 23-yard line.

On the next play, Wax recovers to make a good shoe-string tackle. Duce Chestnut had a shot at an interception, but the ball is just out of reach and falls incomplete.

On 3rd-and-10, Garrett Williams with a well-covered play on Jones in the end zone.

Purdue’s game-tying, 41-yard field-goal attempt is wide right.

Syracuse drive starts 6:41 at own 35-yard line

Shrader gets the ball out quick to Jackson for an early first down.

Syracuse goes back to that matchup on the outside with Tucker, but Shrader just underthrows his running back, who had his man beat by a few steps.

Syracuse will punt it, and Purdue can seize the lead.

Purdue drive starts 8:08 at own 25-yard line

O’Connell shaking off the mistake and feeding his tight end on consecutive throws to advance the ball near midfield.

O’Connell then goes up top to Charlie Jones for a 55-yard touchdown pass. Jones was in coverage.

Purdue’s quick-strike offense has the Boilermakers back in it.

Purdue drive starts 8:17 at own 25-yard line

Geer’s pressure on O’Connell and he tries to get rid of the ball. He throws it right to Caleb Okechukwu, who returns it 17 yards for the pick-six.

Holy cow.

And what a cool moment for Geer. He got chewed out by his position coach earlier in the game for a late hit on O’Connell. Then he comes back and delivers an on-time hit on O’Connell to force the errant throw and game-changing interception.

Syracuse drive starts 11:25 at own 25-yard line

Garrett Shrader keeps it down the left side for a gain of 9 yards. He then finds Courtney Jackson near midfield to move the chains.

Tucker reverses field and hits the gas to come up just shy of the first down. Looks like the officials started moving the chains, then retreated. Tucker is short on third down, and SU will go for it.

It’s rewarded with a home run. Shrader lobs one to Gadsden, who runs out the 46-yard touchdown pass.

Syracuse goes for two and converts on a Shrader run to push the lead to three with 8:17 remaining.

SCORE UPDATE: Purdue 15, Syracuse 10 with 11:25 remaining fourth quarter

Purdue is right on the edge of field-goal range. Mikel Jones in on a run stop. Steve Linton shows up on third down with a huge sack to uncork the crowd, but Linton got a head start and is whistled offside. Purdue converts the 3rd-and-short.

Ja’Had Carter with a big-time pass break-up in coverage on Deion Burks right at the goal line.

O’Connell converts another third down, this time throwing on the run and throwing a dart on the money to Jones down to the 11-yard line.

O’Connell finds his tight end, Payne Durham, for the touchdown. Durham has six catches for 57 yards and a score.

Purdue goes for two, but O’Connell overshoots Jones in the back of the end zone.

O’Connell is 27-for-37 for 224 yards and a touchdown.

Third quarter

END OF THE THIRD QUARTER: Syracuse 10, Purdue 9

Purdue drive starts 2:11 at own 25-yard line

Marlowe Wax with pressure on O’Connell on the first play of the drive. SU has been sending the linebackers more to disrupt the rhythm of Purdue’s quarterback, and it has helped its cause.

Purdue will call timeout and talk over a key 3rd-and-2 from its own 33-yard line. The crowd is back in it.

O’Connell stands tall under pressure and delivers a strike for a first down. On the next play, defensive lineman JT Geer with a late hit on O’Connell. Defensive line coach Chris Achuff is hot after that one.

Syracuse drive starts 8:50 at own 15-yard line

Syracuse is in the red zone for the first time this afternoon on a 20-yard completion to Gadsden.

Shrader flings it out to Gadsden, who is close to another first down.

On 3rd-and-2 from the Purdue 5-yard line, Shrader forces a bad throw into the end zone while he’s being taken to the ground. The play was busted from the start, but SU gets bailed out on a defensive holding call.

Second time SU has been bailed out by a Purdue penalty on this drive.

Tucker is stopped on back-to-back runs. Shrader then throws it up to Isaiah Jones in one-on-one coverage.

That caps an impressive 17-play drive that covered 84 yards over 6:39 of clock.

Earlier in the series, Shrader calls an audible late then takes a high shot. We heard the crack up in the press conference. The crowd is silent and a little annoyed by the Orange’s offense on this day.

Anae starting to feed Tucker here midway through the third quarter. His usage has been way down this week compared to his touches the previous two outings.

Reese Taylor stole a completion away by ripping the ball out of Alford’s hands. Shrader finds Jones for a first down, as the Orange breachs midfield.

Shrader is flushed from the pocket and takes a late hit out of bounds. Purdue giftwraps a first down after having SU dead in it tracks.

Purdue drive starts 12:26 at own 35-yard line

Steve Linton getting some run here in the third quarter. Orange come up with another stop on third down. Purdue will go for it on 4th-and-1 from its own 44-yard line.

O’Connell hands it to Dylan Downing for a first down.

Jones again chases O’Connell to the sideline, and he throws it away, giving the Purdue QB an earful after the play before the referee nudges him to move it along.

Purdue will punt.

Syracuse drive starts 13:32 at own 39-yard line

Orange with its best field position of the game here. Shrader is sacked, as Purdue’s coverage has been sticky.

Shrader with a toss sweep to Tucker, who can’t handle it. Tucker jumps on the fumble. Sideline warning for Syracuse. Each side has one of those.

SU setting up for 3rd-and-20. Shrader’s pass is tipped and falls harmlessly to the ground. The Orange squanders the field position, retreats 20 yards and will punt.

Syracuse is 0-for-6 on third down today.

Purdue drive starts 15:00 at own 25-yard line

Mikel Jones right in the middle of another tackle for loss. It sets Purdue off schedule and brings up 3rd-and-6, where O’Connell misses wide downfield.

Syracuse comes out and forces a three-and-out. We’ll see if the offense can settle in.

Halftime: Purdue 9, Syracuse 3

Purdue’s quarterback has been dealing, and Syracuse’s offense has been a trainwreck here in the first half.

The Orange finished with just 134 yards of offense and never reached the red zone. Garrett Shrader, who has been so impressive with his arm through two weeks, has completed just 4-for-9 passes for 35 yards. Shrader and Tucker have combined for 100 yards on the ground, but drives have stalled out because of penalties or botched trick plays.

Purdue’s quarterback, Aidan O’Connell, has been accurate and efficient, completing 21-of-27 passes for 175 yards in the half. The Orange defene has limited the big plays or snuffed out a scoring drive in the first quarter with a fourth-down stop deep in its own territory.

Two star players, Purdue’s Charlie Jones and Shrader, briefly left the game in the first half but returned.

Second quarter

Purdue drive starts 0:13 at own 45-yard line

Purdue has 13 seconds and two timeouts to get into field-goal range.

Purdue has nowhere to go with the ball on first down and will heave it up to expire the clock.

Syracuse drive starts 2:22 at own 30-yard line

Garrett Shrader has had his shirt tugged on about three or four runs now. He should tuck it in.

Shrader takes off and aborbs another big hit — all for it to be wiped out on a holding call.

SU sets up 2nd-and-20 with the clock winding under a minute. Shrader again leaves the pocket and picks up a modest.

The dam breaks as Shrader feels pressure again and loses a fumble. It was ruled an incomplete pass after review, but the Orange is in all sorts of disarray here offensively and will punt it away with 22 seconds left in the half.

Purdue drive starts 3:09 at own 23-yard line

Mikel Jones having success here in the second quarter getting to O’Connell. Pass-happy Purdue will give you a shot at some extra possessions. And Syracuse will get one after forcing a three-and-out.

Purdue chewed up just 47 seconds there.

Syracuse drive starts 7:54 at own 25-yard line

Garrett Shrader is back in after missing just one play. The crowd takes note and gives him a light applause.

SU comes out running a flea flicker. It is thrown into double coverage toward Damien Alford and easily intercepted. It is also defensive pass interference. First down, Syracuse.

Shrader then flings one out to the flat to Tucker, who picks up another first down.

SU brings on Max Mang with Wes Hoeh to get into 12 personnel. Shrader tucks it and runs for a first down out to the Purdue 38-yard line. SU is doing just enough to keep the chains moving.

On 3rd-and-5, SU takes its first timeout of the half, as Shrader calls an audible at the line with the playclock winding down.

Out of the break, Shrader feels the rush and can’t find Devaughn Cooper over the middle. It’ll be Andre Szmyt for the second time today. He misfires from 41 yards out. Left.

Purdue drive starts 12:59 at own 10-yard line

O’Connell picks up where he left off in the first quarter and finds his tight end for a first down. The play was reviewed for targeting but no foul.

Charlie Jones, back in the game, makes his presence known elevating for a tough catch in front of the SU bench. Garrett Williams with the coverage on Jones on a deep shot down sideline.

On 3rd-and-8, O’Connell looks toward Jones again, and this time he uses his leverage to box Williams out of the play and complete the catch.

After resetting the downs, Mikel Jones gets pressure on O’Connell to rush a wobbly throw. Haven’t seen Steve Linton today. He’s dressed and standing on the sideline.

Purdue’s 40-yard field goal attempt is good.

Syracuse drive starts 0:39 at own 25-yard line

Garrett Shrader is down on the field at the 13:46 mark after absorbing a hit on a scramble. Dino Babers is out to check on his quarterback, while Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is warming on the sideline.

Shrader jogs off the field. Training staff is talking to him on the sideline, but it’ll be Del Rio-Wilson for now.

He comes in on a 3rd-and-14 from the SU 47-yard line. He keeps the play alive and fires an absolute bullet to Oronde Gadsden for a first down. What a play for Del Rio-Wilson, but it’ll be negated by holding and an illegal forward pass. It’ll be a 5-yard penalty and loss of down. SU will punt.

First quarter

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Purdue 6, Syracuse 3

Aidan O’Connell has been a surgeon, completing 13-of-14 passes for 115 yards in the opening quarter.

Shrader, to this point, has been doing most of the damage on the ground, rushing for 39 yards in the first quarter.

Purdue drive starts 5:33 at own 25-yard line

O’Connell has been on the money here. Just pin-point accuracy. Purdue is in the red zone for the second time on two drives.

O’Connell then hands it to Devin Mockobee for the 15-yard touchdown. The extra point is blocked, and Jason Simmons returns it but comes up about 20 yards short of the two-point play.

Earlier in the drive, Alijah Clark returned to the game, and Marlowe Wax made another big tackle in the open field. O’Connell delivers a strike to the tight end to convert another third down.

Purdue tries a wide receiver pass, but no target popped free, and Mikel Jones blows it up and forces an intentional grounding call. That’s a loss of down and the ball spotted back at the Purdue 32-yard line.

Of course, O’Connell gets it all back and more for a 14-yard completion to Mershawn Rice out across midfield.

Charlie Jones is down on the field after a catch out to the SU 29-yard line. O’Connell has been dealing early, and Jones, the transfer from Iowa, is his top target. Jones is being taken to the locker room for evaluation.

Syracuse drive starts 8:55 at own 9-yard line

Shrader uses his legs to avoid the rush and pick up a couple first downs, sliding before absorbing a secon-straight hit up high.

Sean Tucker out near midfield thanks to a block thrown by Isaiah Jones. On the next play, Shrader goes up top to Jones, who draws a defensive pass interference penalty.

Syracuse tries a trick play on a reverse pass by LeQuint Allen, but he overshoots Shrader badly. Allen had a clean alley to pick up a chunk gain too with Shrader out in front.

The drive stalls as Jackson drops an inside tunnel screen.

Andre Szmyt’s 50-yard field goal attempt is good.

Purdue drive start 14:09 at own 25-yard line

After a facemask on Wax, Kevon Darton picks up a TFL to push Purdue back to the 24-yard line in SU territory.

On 3rd-and-16, O’Connell has all the time in the world and finds Charlie Jones near the sideline. Purdue will go for it on 4th-and-3, but Syracuse comes up the stop inches short of the first-down marker.

Alijah Clark with a good cover play on Charlie Jones on the punt. Aidan O’Connell comes out throwing (surprise, surprise). Purdue moves the chain on 3rd-and-1, but just barely. Clark limps off the field on the drive.

Big hit by Marlowe Wax on O’Connell, who got it out in time downfield but just off the fingertips of Jones. O’Connell gets 9 on the next play on a completion toward the sideline to bring up another 3rd-and-1. O’Connell fakes to the running back, then flicks it to the tight end for an easy conversion.

Pregame

Good morning from the JMA Wireless Dome, where Syracuse hosts Purdue, the remaining holdout of Big Ten teams to have played a game in Syracuse.

A couple notable faces in the crowd today: ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips and former Syracuse wide receiver and return specialist Pat Woodcock are here.

The Orange and Boilermakers both have conference games under their belts. Syracuse bashed Louisville, 31-7 on Sept. 3, while Purdue lost a close home-opener to Penn State two days earlier, 35-31.

The point spread has fluctuated throughout the week. Purdue opened as a slight favorite before the game effectively became a pick ‘em midweek. By kickoff, several sportsbooks have SU listed as slight favorite.

Syracuse has taken the field for some pregame work. Backup quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, as has been noted since the preseason, physically looks the part. During warm-ups, he threw one ball off his back foot and zipped it to the receiver as if he threw from a strong base.

Having already seen Pittsburgh, Florida State and Wake Forest have to dip into its quarterback depth, it can’t be overstated how valuable it is having a second player at that position you can trust to go out and help win a game.

Trebor Pena, the Orange slot receiver and return specialist, will not dress for today’s game.
