Timberwolves defeat Pelicans as Rudy Gobert is sent home for
Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in a team huddle.

The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 113-108 Sunday after center Rudy Gobert threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson during a timeout. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Gobert was sent home after the incident, league sources tell The Athletic, which occurred right before halftime as the Timberwolves trailed the Pelicans in a game with playoff position implications.
  • Gobert threw the punch after he and Anderson exchanged words, replays showed. The jab didn’t land and teammates immediately grabbed Gobert and stepped between the two.
  • Minnesota’s Taurean Prince, who was seated during the altercation, immediately stood up and shoved Gobert in response to the punch.
  • Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels also suffered a broken right hand after punching a wall exiting the game, per league sources.

Gobert’s day done

Minnesota ruled Gobert out for the remainder of the game. He finished with two points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.

This is the three-time All-Star’s first season with the Timberwolves after being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the No. 27 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Gobert spent the first nine seasons of his career in Utah.

Minnesota All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns led a Timberwolves rally with 30 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Anthony Edwards added 26 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a season-high four blocks.

New Orleans forward Brandon Ingram paced the Pelicans with a season-high 42 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
