LOS ANGELES — In the history of the United States Open Golf Championship, no player had ever posted a round of 62 or better, but in a 20-minute stretch during Thursday’s first round of the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, both Murrieta native Rickie Fowler and San Diego native Xander Schauffele each accomplished that record-setting feat.
Playing near-perfect golf from start to finish, Fowler made 10 birdies, including four in a row during the middle of his round, to become the first player to shoot 62 in U.S. Open history.
Two groups behind Fowler, Schauffele matched Fowler with a bogey-free round, leaving the two Southern California golfers alone at the top of the leaderboard after day one. Despite their record-setting efforts, the two leaders are just two shots ahead of Wyndham Clark and Dustin Johnson, who each finished at 64. Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman both finished at 5-under-par 65 and sit three shots behind the leaders.
Starting his round on the back nine, Fowler birdied the par-4 10th hole, and from that point on the former Oklahoma State standout said he never really thought about a score or necessarily what he was trying to do other than play his next shot.
Fowler said early in the week he was neither swinging the club well nor having much success on the greens, but during his final preparations on Wednesday something clicked, giving him the confidence needed to go out trust his game and let things happen.
“It was a great day,” Fowler said. “I knew there was birdies to be made out here, but you have to drive it well and get the ball in position first. Yeah, did that, and from there just managed our way around really well.”
Just a year ago Fowler found himself watching the U.S. Open rather than playing, having just missed earning a spot in qualifying. Since then, Fowler has seen his game and his status continue to rise, thanks in part to re-teaming with famed golf instructor Butch Harmon following a three-plus-year run with instructor John Tillery.
Since January, Fowler has had nine top-20 finishes on the PGA Tour and is once again ranked inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
“It’s definitely been long and tough last few years, but it makes it so worth it having gone through that and being back where we are now,” Fowler said. “We’re starting to get maybe as close as we’ve ever been to where I was through kind of that 2014-2015 area (where he was one of golf’s top players).”
Schauffele admitted shooting 62 in a U.S. Open isn’t something he gave much thought to before the tournament started but admitted it was fun to chase Fowler up the leaderboard and earn a piece of major championship golf history.
“Just an all-around performance, honestly,” Schauffele said. “Got lucky, made a really long putt on (No. 1). Hit some really nice iron shots in from distance. It’s kind of a mixed bag. I think the only place we were able to get away with a few mishits would be off the tee. Coming into greens, like you said, you need to be pretty clean. When I wasn’t, I was still able to make birdie because I made some long putts. Probably try and clean that up as the days go on.”
The conditions were prime for scoring – overcast, mild with barely any wind. A lack of sun and a bit of mist in the morning made greens a bit softer than anticipated, allowing players to spin their approach shots back easier than anticipated, according to Schauffele.
“I think it made the greens sort of that more holeable speed wise and the fairways were also a little bit softer, making them a little easier to hit. I’m anticipating the sun to come out just as much as every West Coast person out here. I’m thinking the course is going to firm up a little bit.”
While he’s yet to win a major, Schauffele has consistently put himself in the mix over the last few years in golf’s biggest events, demonstrating the kind of tenacity and mental toughness that it often takes to win a tournament like the U.S. Open.
“It’s just hard,” Schauffele said. “You have to kind of think your way around. Austin (his caddie) helped me on three or four attempts today where he talked me into a safer line or playing away from trouble, on six, for example. I was trying to go left and he was like, let’s go this way (right). I kept going left, and he’s like, let’s go this way. It’s a credit to him. We always think we can get away with some ridiculous stuff out there, and sometimes it’s nice to have some help to talk you off the ledge.”
Johnson started on the back nine and made the turn at 2 under before kicking his round into high gear over the final nine holes. Johnson birdied four of the first six holes on the back nine, adding another birdie on the par-5 eighth hole to get him to 7 under and one shot out of the lead going to his final hole.
But Johnson’s 5-iron on the par-3 ninth flew over the green and landed in a bunker beside the 18th green. After blasting out of the bunker to 15 feet, his par putt hit the lip of the cup and spun out, leading to bogey.
Despite the bogey finish, Johnson was pleased with his play and his position after the opening round.
“I drove it really well and controlled the distance with the irons really good, other than the last hole and I didn’t really hit a bad shot, just pulled it a little bit and it went a lot further than I thought,” said Johnson, who tied Tiger Woods for most career rounds of 65 or lower in the majors (10). “Still was in an OK position to get it up and down and hit a nice putt. It was a little rude that that one didn’t go in, but obviously I swung it really nicely today and hit a lot of good shots.”
Johnson said he didn’t expect anyone to shoot 62, never mind two players but even with that he said his approach heading into round one and the rest of the tournament remains the same.
“Obviously the guys went out this morning and you could tell the greens were a little bit more receptive than they have been,” Johnson said. “The course isn’t really that gettable, obviously. If you play well and hit it in the right spots and you can be aggressive, you get a few wedges in your hand, but you’ve still got to hit a really good golf shot if you want to get it close to the hole. Today obviously with the setup, it was definitely somewhat gettable if you drove it really well.”
The course was so defenseless that no one shot 80 or higher over 18 holes. The U.S. Open had never had more than two players at 65 or better in the opening round. There were six such rounds at LACC.
Most telling was the average score of 71.37 was the lowest for an opening round in U.S. Open history. Most embarrassing for the USGA was the U.S. Open joining the Bermuda Championship as the only tournaments this year to feature two rounds at 62 on the same day.
“I’d imagine the USGA is not loving the scores too much,” Mackenzie Hughes said. “I’m guessing the sprinklers are going to be turned off tonight.”
The toughest test in golf. Tough meant keeping track of the 485 birdies and eight eagles.
While opening with a 62 has given both Fowler and Schauffele a leg up on the field, both players were quick to point out to anyone who would listen that it’s only Thursday and that there is still a lot of golf left to be played.
The next best score from the morning wave was a 3-under 67 by a group that included Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau. Five more players shot 67 before the day was over.
“It’s going to be tough tomorrow afternoon but at least we got out of the gate and off to a good start,” Fowler said.
He was asked what his round of 62 would have meant to him as a little kid envisioning a future in golf.
“If you were to tell me as a kid that … yeah, I’d be stoked. But obviously being human and me and being out here, I want more. That’s why we’re still chugging along.”
