The first quarter was a battle between the defenses. TCU drove the first drive to the 21 yard line, but the Jayhawks held them at 3rd and 7. To put the Frogs on top, Griffin Kell was brought in for the field goal. Neither team was able move the ball much after that due to the hard work of both defenses.
Kansas returned to their bread-and butter option play in the second quarter. On their second possession of quarter 2, Jalon Dani threw an insane 48-yard completion to Mason Fairchild. The Jayhawks looked like they had figured out the TCU defense. They were on the move for an unavoidable touchdown, but they failed to make it within the 1-yard line. Shadrach Banks recovered it. Max Duggan, Quentin Johnston drove the ball 99 yards in seven plays to make it 10-0.
After the fumble, Brett Gibbons, KillerFrogs' writer, stated that "That fumble just assuring everybody you will never take Kansas out of Kansas."
