The Miami Heat and Erik Spoelstra reached a contract extension that will continue one of the longest-tenured team-coach relationships in the NBA. The eight-year contract is worth at least $120 million, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The total value is a record tally among coaches in North American sports.

The $15 million-a-year average ranks tied for fourth across all sports.

Spoelstra, 53, has led six Heat teams to the NBA Finals, winning two titles. Last year, he passed Red Holzman to crack the top 20 for most wins all time by an NBA coach, and now ranks 19th with 725. Only three of those coaches—Gregg Popovich (San Antonio), Jerry Sloan (Utah) and Red Auerbach (Boston)—won more games with a single franchise.

Spoelstra, who was hired to replace Pat Riley as the Heat head coach in 2008, was in the last year of his current contract that had an average base salary of $7.5 million and upside with incentives. No one expected the Heat lifer to leave South Beach; waiting this long to sign a deal gave Spoelstra’s CAA agents a couple of key data points in negotiations.

This summer, Popovich signed a five-year contract extension worth at least $80 million. Pop, who is in his 28th year with the Spurs, has been the dean of NBA coach pay since Phil Jackson hung up his whistle. His new deal reestablished that hierarchy flowing the stunning six-year, $78.5 million deal the Detroit Pistons handed Monty Williams in June. Owner Tom Gores wanted Williams and kept raising his offer until the 2021 Coach of the Year could not say no.

Williams’ deal already had a ripple effect before Spoelstra signed. Michael Malone, fresh off a title with the Denver Nuggets, and Indiana Pacers’ coach Rick Carlisle reached contract extensions worth $12 million and $9 million annually, respectively.

Steve Kerr should be the next to cash in; like Spoelstra was, the Golden State Warriors coach is in the last year of his contract. Kerr has led the team to six NBA Finals, winning four titles, during his first nine seasons on the sidelines. His team has never shied from spending money, including $100 million-plus luxury tax bills and building a $1.4 billion arena, the most expensive in the sport. Kerr’s current deal averages $9 million a year.

Ty Lue is another coach who should benefit from the recent agreements. His $7 million-a-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers runs through next season, but the eight-year coaching veteran, who’s never had a losing season, has a title on his resume and has an excellent reputation with players.

NBA coaching tenures are precarious, as owners flip the switch when teams lose or coaches fall out of favor with star players. Only six coaches were on the sidelines for their current teams before the 2021-22 season; Popovich, Spoelstra and Kerr are the biggest anomalies with a combined 54 years on the bench with their current teams. They are also the only current coaches with multiple NBA titles.
