A new game in the “Borderlands” saga, “Borderlands 4,” will be launching from 2K Games in 2025.

Per 2K’s description for the title: “See if you have what it takes to go down in history as a legendary Vault Hunter as you search for secret alien treasure, blasting everything in sight.”

The Gearbox-developed game, which was announced out of the gamescom video game convention Tuesday, is available to add to wishlist’s now.

This game marks the fourth mainline “Borderlands” title and the seventh in the overall franchise, which has sold more than 87 million copies to date.

2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive revealed in March plans to acquire “Borderlands” maker Gearbox from Embracer Group for $460 million. As part of that deal, which closed in June, Take-Two got the rights to Gearbox IP, including “Borderlands,” “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands,” “Homeworld,” “Risk of Rain,” “Brothers in Arms” and “Duke Nukem.”

At the time of the acquisition announcement, Gearbox teased it had six “key interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development,” which included five sequels, two from “Borderlands” and “Homeworld” universes, and at least one “exciting new intellectual property,” all of which have been acquired in the sale. Today’s reveal of “Borderlands 4” marks the first confirmation of one of those projects moving out of the development stage.

“The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with ‘Borderlands’ since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game,” Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford said. “All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for ‘Borderlands 4’ and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about ‘Borderlands’ better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”

“We’re thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment,” 2K core games senior vice president and general manager Catharina Lavers Mallet said. “The ‘Borderlands’ series is one of 2K’s most successful franchises ever and is beloved by millions globally. We’re excited that our already close partnership and collaboration with the Gearbox team has grown even deeper, and we look forward to delivering best-in-class experiences for both longtime fans and new players alike.”

The “Borderlands 4” announcement comes on the heels of the “Borderlands” film starring Cate Blanchett recently bombing at the box office.
