2024 MLB Draft: Day 2 open thread

2024 MLB Draft Day 2 open thread
The draft continues with rounds 3 through 10

It’s Day 2 of the MLB Draft. Today the teams will be conducting rounds 3 through 10 starting at 1 pm Central time.

Unlike the big presentation of yesterday’s first round, the rest of the draft will be conducted via conference call. You can listen in at MLB.com. The picks today should take about 20 seconds each and there won’t be any discussion of the picks after they are made, although generally they take a short break after each round and they’ll have a bit of video and discussion of some of the picks then.

The Cubs have the 17th pick in each round from now on. They picked two infielders in Florida State third baseman Cam Smith and College of Charleston’s Cole Mathis, whom the Cubs announced as a third baseman but who hasn’t really played there much outside of the Cape Cod League. Mathis also pitches, although he’s given that up to concentrate on being a position player.

You can read my summary of the two picks from last night for more information.

Without knowing the bonus demands of players, it’s hard to predict whom the Cubs will pick today. But some of the best players available are:

Dakota Johnson OF Mississippi State

Joey Oakey RHP Ankeny Centennial HS (IA)

Mike Sirota OF Northeastern

Kevin Bazzell C Texas Tech

Drew Beam RHP Tennessee

Josh Hartle LHP Wake Forest

Those six could all be gone by the time the Cubs make the 13th pick of the third round or unsignable because of their bonus demands, but one interesting name that could be available is Carson Wiggins, a right-handed pitcher from Roland HS (OK). He’s huge at 6’5” and throws mid-90s with a hard-breaking slider and a promising change. Wiggins does have a poor injury history—he missed his junior year with Tommy John surgery—and while his stuff is promising, it’s also very raw. There’s a reason he didn’t get picked in the first two rounds. Wiggins would be more of a long-term project. But Wiggins is also the younger brother of Jaxon Wiggins, whom the Cubs drafted in the second round last year out of Arkansas. We know the Cubs love the bloodlines, so he might be someone the Cubs target in the third round.

Or not.

This is an open thread.
