Both Mississippi contestants on 'American Idol' advance to top five ...

The top eight contestants of "American Idol" performed on Sunday night’s episode, with the nation saying goodbye to three of them.

The two Mississippi contestants were not among those eliminated.

Mississippi musicians Colin Stough, 18, of Gattman, and Zachariah Smith, 19, of Amory advanced to the Top 5 with hopes of becoming the next "American Idol.”

Haven Madison, Oliver Steele, and Warren Peay were eliminated Sunday night.

Sunday's judges were Luke Bryan, Ed Sheeran and the mentor for the week, Alanis Morissette. All the contestants performed one of Alanis Morissette's and Ed Sheeran's most beloved songs.

“There’s a strength in Zachariah, said Morissette, “I just love it.”

Smith and Haven Madison also did a rendition duet of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking out loud.”

Colin Stough performed “Hand in my pocket” by Morissette. “Last week the judges told me I needed to get nasty,” said Stough during his one on one with Morissette. 

“If getting nasty is this, then I love nasty,” said Morissette after Stough’s performance, “beautiful work.” 

“And he’s just so damn cute I don’t know what to do,” said Luke Bryan, adding in, “you just make people smile.” 

Stough and Megan Danielle also did a rendition duet of Ed Sheeran’s “Dive.” 

In between the competition, Ed Sheeran performed an acoustic version of his song “Eyes Closed,” and Alanis Morissette performed her song “Thank You.”

"American Idol” airs Sundays and Mondays on ABC.
