Sony Pictures announces acquirement of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
(WJET/WFXP) – A multinational mass media conglomerate has officially acquired a popular movie theatre chain.
On Wednesday, June 12, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) announced via a press release their official acquirement of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
Alamo Drafthouse, which first opened in 1997 in Austin, Texas, is an American cinema chain that doubles as a restaurant. Patrons are able to enjoy dinner and drinks while watching Hollywood’s newest releases. They see over 10 million guests annually.
With this new acquirement, SPE will manage Alamo Drafthouse under their newly established Sony Pictures Experiences division.
Tim League, the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is excited about the company’s future with SPE.
“We are beyond thrilled to join forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment to expand our company vision to be the best damn cinema that has ever, or will ever, exist now in ways we could only ever dream of,” said League. “They have a deep respect and understanding of cinema’s ability to both drive growth and create lasting cultural impact which aligns perfectly with everything Alamo Drafthouse stands for.”
Several inner workings at the Drafthouse will remain the same amid this change.
All 35 Alamo Drafthouse locations will remain open during this transition, and their official headquarters will remain in Texas. Michael Kustermann, the current CEO of Alamo Drafthouse, will also remain in his current position.
