Contract between Aetna and Providence expires, affecting about 9K ...

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - Aetna health insurance is dropping Providence Health & Services from its network, and the move could leave thousands of patients in limbo.
It comes after the insurance company and the health care system failed to reach a deal before the new year. It impacts about 9,000 Providence patients across Oregon with Aetna insurance.
Those with Aetna will now be seen at out-of-network rates, with the exception of Providence Medical Group clinics and providers in southern Oregon. That contract lasts until Feb. 16.

According to a statement from Providence, “Our contract with Aetna expired Dec. 31. Other insurers have agreed to step up and share in the increasing costs of health care, but Aetna has not been willing to do so.”
Providence employee benefits are not impacted by the expiration, since they are self-insured and Aetna serves as their benefits administrator.
