Summer Walker Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates Due To Struggles With Anxiety

She recently responded to fan criticisms about her enthusiasm at meet and greets.

2019’s breakout R&B star Summer Walker revealed that she will be canceling multiple upcoming shows on her The First And Last tour, citing her struggles with social anxiety. She announced the change in a video shared with fans, explaining that she appreciates their support but has been struggling with life on the road:

I just wanna say that I really really really appreciate anyone who genuinely loves my music, comes to the shows, comes to the meets and greets, supports me, and really loves and respects my personality. Unfortunately I’m not gonna be able to finish this tour because it doesn’t really coexist with my social anxiety and my introverted personality. I really hope people understand and respect that at the end of the day. I am a person, I have feelings, I get tired, I get sad. It’s just a lot. So I don’t want to lose myself for someone else. I want to give y'all what I can. I’m gonna keep making music and I'ma do a few shows, but I can’t finish.

She also shared the dates that she will still perform:

The announcement comes just a few days after Walker seemed to hint at retirement following the end of her current tour.

“I’ve decided y’all don’t deserve me lol I knew from day one I was to real for this shit. y’all can have the music & ima just head out,” Walker wrote on Instagram last week. “fuck the interviews, photo shoots, videos, & really the shows too. I’ll finish this tour out tho. I’m just a regular person, nothing more. lol people got this fame shit fucked up. I been me from day one, I’m not bout to start acting different, talking different, treating people different, or looking different. people really expect too much from you.”

Earlier this week, she addressed criticisms that she seemed aloof or unenthusiastic at meet and greets:

I just want to say to all the fans who purchase meet & greets I really APPRECIATE y’all taking the extra time to meet me and share your stories. I tell everyone individually ‘thank you’, I spread love, we laugh & I give genuine compliments. Now for those who’re upset b/c I don’t give hugs idk what to tell you… I’m an empath, and that transference of energy from that many people each day would literally KILL me. … So I ask you please respect my space in those moments.

Walker’s debut album, Over It, dropped last month, and was an immediate success. It earned the biggest first-week album sales for a female R&B act since Beyoncé’s LEMONADE in 2016, moving 134,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Her songs “Playing Games” with Bryson Tiller and “Come Thru” with Usher remain on the Billboard Hot 100 chart more than a month after the project dropped.
